Smoother skin. Pitted scars seem much more smaller. Other scarring tremendously reduced. A pimple only pops up once a month during my period!

As a teenager, All I could remember was acne acne acne and the scarring it left behind was pitted. Not large pits but pits that were still visible - just big open pores. Scarring on my cheeks was really bad. I use to put liquid foundation, powder heavily to cover the remains of my acne. A word about sebum

The last known use of sebum was a territorial make for male gerbils and hamsters. 

The claim that sebum is necessary for moisturizing the skin is a little bit absurd when you consider that the finest skin is found in eight-year-old boys and eunuchs, neither of whom have any sebum. 

What is the Acne Cause? and What Causes Acne Scarring?

Before talking about acne scars, a word about spots that may look like scars but are not scars in the sense that a permanent change has occurred. Even though they are not true scars and disappear in time, they are visible and can cause embarrassment.

Macules or "pseudo-scars"are flat, red or reddish spots that are the final stage of most inflamed acne lesions. After an inflamed acne lesion flattens, a macule may remain to "mark the spot" for up to 6 months. When the macule eventually disappears, no trace of it will remain—unlike a scar.

Post-inflammatory pigmentation is discoloration of the skin at the site of a healed or healing inflamed acne lesion. It occurs more frequently in darker-skinned people, but occasionally is seen in people with white skin. Early treatment by a dermatologist may minimize the development of post-inflammatory pigmentation. Some post-inflammatory pigmentation may persist for up to 18 months, especially with excessive sun exposure. Chemical peeling may hasten the disappearance of post-inflammatory pigmentation.

The Inflammatory Cause of Acne

Ongoing research is changing the classical view of acne as caused by Propionibacterium acnes bacteria to an approach of acne as an inflammatory disorder. In this view androgens, regulatory neuropeptides, hormone receptors, and environmental factors are portrayed being agents able to interrupt the natural cyclical dynamic breakdown of dead cells into sebum within the sebaceous follicles. Interruption of emission of sebum to the surface of skin leads to obstruction of the ducts (microcomedones) and then bigger comedones that become inflammatory lesions.

The acne inflammation goes through certain stages. Pro-inflammatory lipids, chemokines (substances produced by cells at the site of injury or infection which give rise to intracellular signals which promote cell motion, and cytokines (cell-secreted proteins that modify the expression of growth factors as well as migration of leukocytes to a damaged site and fibroblast proliferation), seem to act as mediators for the initiation of acne lesions. Propionibacterium acnes is not originally related but can mediate later inflammatory events leading to worsening of the lesions.

The Journal of Investigative Dermatology (2003) Nº 121, pages 20–27 reports that the early manifestation of acne lesions is hypercornification of the follicle walls. The cells that line the walls of the sebum ducts when affected by acne have thicker membranes and are kept together by many layers of keratinized cells compacted together.

The pilosebaceous ductal hypercornification can be seen histologically as microcomedones and clinically as blackheads, whiteheads, and other forms of comedones, such as macrocomedones.

This hypercornification gives rise to the ‘‘horny’’ plug, which is formed within the follicular duct/lumen. When these horny plugs are sloughted off as such, as if they were hardened or solidified lava in a volcano-like eruption they can not but further damage the follicle ducts.
