Hypertrophic Scars Treatment Options

by Martha Fitzharris

The number of skin treatments available today can be overwhelming. You shouldn't let the sheer number of options scare you from seeking treatment. If you want to reduce the visibility of your scars, take a look into the below opportunities.

Cosmetic Scar Treatments

Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure where the skin is frozen and then abraded away with a special instrument. The new skin that grows as a result of this action is new and smooth. This procedure was originally intended to target pock marks and acne and other scars.

Pros: One treatment works to regenerate new skin and soften the sharpness of scars.

Cons: This procedure requires either local or general anesthesia. Although healing can be completed within 7-10 days, pinkness associated with skin irritation can last 6-8 weeks. Burn scars are not treated with dermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion combines abrasion (usually from special crystals) and suction of skin to lift off the outer most layer of skin. This process stimulates the regeneration of healthy skin cells that replace the old and damaged ones removed during the procedure.

Pros: The procedure is quick and requires little recovery time. It is less invasive than dermabrasion.

Cons: For best results, you should complete 4-8 initial treatments with breaks of 1-2 weeks. Follow-up treatments are required for maintenance.

Steroid Injections, injected straight into the scar tissue, eliminate color and inflammation as well as slow the production of collagen. Extra collagen forms the protrusion and often causes itchiness.

Pros: Steroids work well with decreasing the visibility of keloid and hypertrophic scars.

Cons: Steroid use can cause thinning and weakening of the skin. Does not work well for atrophic scars. Collagen injections for atrophic scars have short-term results.

Laser Treatment can be used to combat the different types of scars. Generally, during the session, a surgeon moves the laser along the scar tissue, removing a layer of skin that covers the protruding scar tissue and exposing new skin. It is an effective hypertrophic acne scar treatment. The laser used to raise sunken atrophic scars encourages the manufacture of collagen.

Pros: Laser treatment has proven successful for atrophic and hypertrophic scars. As laser treatment of scars is involved with other cosmetic skin procesures, you only need to spend once on facility and anesthesia fees.

Cons: Common side effects include hyperpigmentation and/or hypopigmentation. Those with skin disorders such as psoriasis, cystic acne and dermatitis should seek other treatment first.

Scar Revision refers to a set of surgical techniques that are conducted to enhance the appearance of scar tissue, blending it in with surrounding skin. Hypertrophic treatment scar revision surgery refers to the removal of excess scar tissue and change of incision line, helping it heal in a way that leaves the scar less noticeable.

Pros: Scar revision is versatile and can be performed on tissue all over the body. People typically elect to have this surgery where scar tissue is highly visible. Unlike many other treatments, scar revision produces permanent results.

Cons: Time involved can be hours and include anesthesia.

Over the Counter Scar Treatments

Onion Extract when applied to scar tissue helps reduce appearance of scars by acting as an anti-inflammatory and by inhibiting the production of collagen. Like many home remedies, consistent application and patience is required in order to get results.

Silicone, found as a gel or sheets, lightens and flattens protruding scars. Although a few hypothesis exist, scientists have yet to agree on how silicone works.

Mucin, produced by the Helix Aspersa Muller, acts much like the cosmetic procedures discussed above. This secretion has anti-inflammatory, exfoliating and skin-regenerating properties that produce results similar to those that remove the superficial layer of skin to stimulate healthy skin cell growth. The inclusion of this secretion in skin products is rapidly gaining popularity.

Powered by the anti-inflammatory and exfoliating properties of mucin, BIOSKINREPAIR is an effective scar treatment. As a scar removal treatment, BIOSKINREPAIR exfoliates and increases the regeneration rate of skin cells. It relives the painful itchiness associated with excess collagen as well as restores the balance of proteins to your skin - an ideal atrophic and hypertrophic scars treatment.
